pre season junior coordinator meeting
we had a great presentation from an ARU rep talking us through a number of pathways rugby trial rules that were analysed from last season. this has resulted in some significant rule changes that will greatly increase the participation levels of all players. another breakthrough is the under 10 age group will be broken out of pathways and included in home and away scheduling!
in addition there were several suggestions proposed by the VRU including the introduction of an under 13 saturday morning competition and an under 15 sunday afternoon competition. this is obviously music to the ears of clubs like ours. what was even better was there was general consensus in the room that this was a good path forward! the under 13 was nominated due to the highest player numbers being in the under 12 age group this season. the under 15 comp has been designed to encourage the smaller kids in the under age group of the under 16 to stay involved in rugby. it is also on a sunday to encourage private schoolboy rugby players to stay involved with club rugby. the afternoon was nominated due to the nigh proportion of islanders in the game and their religious commitments on sunday morning.
there were a number of other points raised that i will circulate once i receive the presentations from the evening. the ball is clearly rolling and the VRU are embracing the changes necessary without making potentially destructive wholesale changes.
stay tuned folks - 2011 is gunna be a great year for rugby in melbourne!!

Annual General Meeting
Club AGM's are historically avoided due to the fear of being roped into a role on a committee.
It would be great to see some new faces at this year's AGM to offer your thoughts, and rest assured you will not be nominated for a role unless you are willing and able :)
More to follow....
Presentation Day
Many thanks to Jacqui Diamond for all her incredible work behind the scenes to make this day possible.
We will be loading up all the lads who were nominated as trophy winners shortly.
Rep honours
Tangaroa Hosea Jnr (or Tah as we all know him) not only led the State Under 14 team but was recently awarded the "player of the season" title. Not that we are big on awards here but this is certainly an outstanding honour and well deserved to big Tah. His future looks very promising and with the Rebels kicking off shortly who knows, we might see Tah debut as one of the true blue local products??
Our second rep gong is from our new boy - Henry Stowers. Henry played in the Under 14 rep side (even though is is still only 12) and was recently named captain of the state under 13 team. We look forward to seeing Henry strut his stuff with us next season as a 2nd year under 14.
Congratulations to both lads and their families.

Presentation Day Season 2010
So the final act is upon us, Saturday 11th September is just around the corner. The presentation day will be a great way to wrap up the season. The kids can expend the final vestiges of their winter energy during the activities session while the adults can review the season that was over a quiet drink.
We are looking forward to seeing you all there when we recognise the efforts of all the boys that represented the mighty Redbacks & Barbarians this season.
Dont forget that we have some great auction and raffle prizes so bring some extra $$$ with you to avoid intense disappointment!
Cya Saturday.

A note about the Heritage Day lunch
It is simply an excellent way to connect to the past players and as junior parents an excellent way to better understand the fabric of this club. Craig and I will be backing up for this lunch so please get in touch or have a chat at training.

U8's Game Result
Boroondara Black had a little more advantage with a few bigger players on their team. Again it was a great game with tries going to both teams and a lot of sliding in the mud. The player of the game went to Makea.

Hosting the Pathways Games this weekend
The VRU rep will be at the ground too to assist. our seniors are at home this weekend as well so there will be a handover after the last pathways game which gets underway at 10:30am.
The rough order of running will be the Under 8s starting at 8:30 and the 10s staggered starts at the conclusion of the 8s.
All Under 10 parents are expected to help out in the canteen and the BBQ whilst the Under 8s are playing and a parent swap over to occur at the conclusion of the 8s games.
Many hands will make light work folks so enjoy the day and please help out where you can.
Post Round 4 Re-gradings
I am pleased to say that after a string of heavy defeats but upbeat outlooks our under 12 team (made of mainly first year under 12 players) has been graded down to the "B" competition. This should provide them with a much better level of competition where they will be able to compete more regularly. I just wanted to extend a thank you to the Moorabbin Under 12 side for last weekends mixed match. All our lads thoroughly enjoyed themselves and left the field a little wiser. it is this type of spirit that is typical of rugby union. Good luck for the rest of the season RAMS.
Our Under 14 team has been deemed good enough to hold their own in the "A" competition. This will provide the lads with an excellent learning curve over the remainder of the season. made up of a mainly first year player group they will no doubt pick up plenty of techniques by playing against the best the competition has to offer. This weekend will be a massive test for the lads as they head to Endeavour Hills to play against this red hot team!
Our Under 16B combined Box Hill team will stay in the "B" competition. Based on their showing last week against Maroondah they are set to go from strength to strength and really improve upon their skill sets. It was great to see so many lads turning out for the home game last weekend and hopefully a similar turnout will be seen this weekend at our other home game at Box Hill against the Geelong/Footscray combined team. May the Barbarians be at their rampaging best this weekend!
On a slightly off topic note we are delighted to announce a second Under 8 team entering the competition. This reflects an excellent growth of our club from the absolute grassroots. A big thank you to all those managing our Pathways teams as well!

U8's Game Result
From the start the boys from last year showed their skills by holding a straight defensive line. The new players followed suit resulting in a strong defense and few tries from Eltham.
On the attacking front and with the referee letting the game flow several of the Boroondara boys ran in for their first try for the season with some scoring one or two more. The parents couldn’t keep trace of the score as they were jumping up and down cheering on the team. If a score was to be recorded then it would be 9 to 2 although one of the boys said it was 20 to 2.
All the boys enjoyed their first game and definitely the snakes provided by Deb (Tim’s wife).
In summary, great behavior by the parents and fantastic spirit by the boys.

Junior 10s Carnival Review
It was great to see a mass of junior rugby players across the three fields at Northern Rugby Union's facilities. A big thank you to those folks for putting on the day. Hopefully you sold a few sausage sanga's and made a few bucks!
Now we have our last training session(s) this week and we are into the season proper.

Training update 27.4.2010
I thought it best to send an email confirming that training will be run this evening for all age groups (excepting under 16s).
We are required to produce photo identification for each of the players this year so we will be taking photographs of the lads tonight for this purpose. We are also required to sight proof of age before the weekend and request that you bring a copy of a birth certificate or passport with you tonight.
We hope that this is the last of the main administrative tasks for the season and are looking forward to getting the season started and playing some rugby!
If you are unable to attend training this evening, please email me a photo of your child and the corresponding proof of age document.
We are only able to allow players with a valid photo identification to play on the weekend.
Thank you again for your support throughout the pre-season.

Practice Match This Weekend
Please note that we require each team to be at the grounds 40 minutes prior to your kick off. This is to ensure that the coaches can get everyone sorted with plenty of time.
The full list of matches is as follows:
9am U12s Box Hill v Boroondara 3 x 15mins Field 2
10am U12s Box Hill v Melbourne 3 x 15 mins Field 2
11am U16s Box Hill v Boroondara 2 x 30 mins Field 2
9am U14s Box Hill v Melbourne 1 x 25 mins Field 1
9.30am U14s Melbourne v Melton 1 x 25 mins Field 1
10am U14s Box Hill v Boroondara 1 x 25 mins Field 1
10.30am U14s Box Hill/Melton v Boroondara 1 x 25 mins Field 1
11am U16s Box Hill B v Boroondara 2 x 30 mins Field 1
I'm sure if any clubs need extra players that we can mix and match to ensure the boys get a good run. If boys are keen for another run than Field 2 can be utilised from 11am. I'll leave it up to coaches to decide.
Referees have been requested via VRU.

Volunteers
We are still in need of a few team managers and a coach (Under 10s). The policy is that if a team does not have a coach and a team manager they will not be playing. It is simply too big a burden for one person. And lets face it: 15 players per side = 30 parents = plenty of support available. The maths works.
If you are looking to get involved in a lower commitment role then we have some more ad hoc type positions still to be filled.
Just get involved - you are sure to enjoy it!
Touch Judge Course update
But if you could let me know that you have done the course it would be great so that we can have a register of all accredited Touchies and Ref's.
School vs Club - peaceful co-existence
Craig Barr (Vice President - Juniors) has met with a number of the First 15 coaches at the schools and they are adamant that the players benefit significantly from playing club rugby and school rugby. So rest assured even if your child cannot make it to club training nights they are heavily encouraged to play/keep playing with our club throughout their high school years. We are continuing to develop an excellent pathway to senior rugby through our Junior Development Squads. And what better club to be involved with than the holder of the most Premier Grade Premierships? Not a bad pathway into the mighty Melbourne Rebels either...

Training starts Tuesday 13th April
We are getting back in the swing of things this Tuesday 13th April at 5:30pm. The Under 10s and Under 8s will finish up around 6:30pm while the older lads will be knocking off around 7pm.
As usual we will be running a sausage sizzle at the conclusion of training for all the players.

We have a practice game (Under 12, 14, 16) scheduled this weekend Saturday 17th April against Box Hill at the Box Hill grounds so it is most important that we get good numbers at training this week. Looking forward to seeing all the mighty Junior Redbacks again on Tuesday.

2010 Coaching Kids Rugby Course (CKR)
The VRU will be running a Coaching Kids Rugby (CKR) Course on Monday 19 April for all Pathway coaches (U8-U12). The course offers a great emphasis on Coaching/Refereeing at the Pathway levels and will provide you with the basic skills on coaching and developing Kids Rugby and
The course will be held at Box Hill Rugby Club, Sparkes Reserve (cnr
All U8, U10 and U12 coaches are strongly encouraged to attend the course. We also encourage any team delegate who will Referee the team throughout the season to attend.
We have decided to structure the course in a way that will benefit all coaches (i.e. we will have a number of presenters in attendance on the night to make the session specific for all coaches). During the practical sections, one presenter will take the Walla coaches and the other presenter will take the Mini/Midi coaches through ‘Core Skills’ and ‘Individual Team Skills’. The CKR Walla course will run for 2 hours and the CKR Mini/Midi course will run for 3 hours (the extra hour is the Smart Rugby component)
A brief outline of the course structure is below
Intro to Kids
Warm Up 10 mins
Core Skills 45 mins
Individual and Team Skills 20 mins
Cool Down 5 mins
Game Management 30 mins
Conclusion 5 mins
Smart
At the conclusion of the CKR course (2 hours), we will be running a Smart Rugby component for all Mini/Midi coaches. The Walla coaches are more than welcome to stay, however it is not a requirement that Walla coaches are SR compliant as Walla is a modified non-contact game. All Mini/Midi coaches must be SR compliant.
All participants will receive a CKR booklet and DVD. Participants who stay for the Smart Rugby Component will receive a SR booklet and DVD.

Under 12 State Trials
Is there anybody out there?
- Team managers (Under 16, Under 10)
- Equipment coordinator
- Grounds coordinator
Whilst these roles will require a commitment of time they are critical to the success of the season. If you are able to assist please get in touch with me asap (0400 777 582, michael@adoncar.com.au).
ALSO,
We have a number of upcoming courses that the VRU requires attendance at, being:
- Junior coaching
- Refereeing
- Assistant referee (touch judges)
Having done the Assistant referee course last year I can say that it was time well spent understanding the new rules. In addition our team last year received a bonus point for each match as we had plenty of parents that had done the course and could step up to do the Assistant refereeing each match.
Please get in touch if you can assist with any of the above. The club can only continue to grow and provide opportunities to your children if you get involved.
JUNIOR 10'S CARNIVAL DAY
The carnival is an excellent opportunity for all the boys to get involved and get some real game time before the season proper commences. The games are played in a round robin format and are shorter than normal matches.
Please advise me (michael@adoncar.com.au) if you think your child will be unable to attend this day so that we can confirm player numbers.
Welcome all new players
Also a big thank you to the coaches for their commitment to this new approach to training. So a big thank you to John, Tanga, ET and Craig. The lads are sure to benefit from your extra help and if anything we have managed to get them "bulking up" on a steady intake of sausage sandwiches!
Apart from the Under 16s (these guys will continue to train throughout the school holidays) we will see you all back bright and energised on Tuesday 13th April at 5:30pm from the Under 6s up.
If you know of any current players or you have some mates that should be coming down to training make sure you let them know over the school holidays.

Sponsors Required!!
Why the need for sponsorship?
We are planning to have the entire Junior Club outfitted in new jerseys. For those of you that are new to the club some of our lads are playing in jerseys that were first spotted in a friendly union game on the Ark! We reckon its time to change em over. Check out the artist impression of the new jerseys in the top right hand corner!
QUICK!
We have until Wednesday 10th March (yep a full 5 days notice) before the orders are closed off for jerseys this season. Sorry for the late notice but we thought we had it covered.
We have been circulating a very brief Sponsorship Proposal to a number of potential sponsors. That Proposal can be provided by emailing me at michael@adoncar.com.au.
So please get in touch if you think you can help.

Billets for our UK Colts lads
Our club Vice President Tony Ward has asked me to share this with you in regard to our Colts that have come out from the UK. If you can help out please email me at michael@adoncar.com.au or call me on 0400 777 582.
Ellen and I are currently housing 6 English lads who are in Australia for their "Gap year", and will be playing Rugby with our Colts for this season.
As we have family arriving from New York next week (on 12 March) and they are staying with us until 28 March, we need to arrange alternative accommodation for these 6 English lads for this period.
Five of these lads have played Rugby with Westoe Rugby Club in Newcastle, England, since they were 5, and are now 18/19 years old. The sixth player has travelled to Australia on his own, and comes from the Ampthill Club located between London and Leicester. They are qualified coaches who have volunteered to provide specialised skills sessions for our juniors while they are here. I can also vouch for their character, as they have been staying at our house for the last 6 weeks. We will welcome them back after our family departs, but in the meantime could we ask for volunteers to house these boys for the period of 12 to 28 March.I realise that it is not likely to be possible for anyone to put up all 6, but it would be good if we could get them accommodation in pairs. I have them in 3 bedrooms, with one bed and one mattress on the floor in each room - nothing fancy. If it helps anyone, I can lend a mattress (single size) to any household capable of putting them up.
They are also looking for more work, as they are currently getting casual work with Cleanevent which helps them keep their heads above water, but they are eating into their savings.

Sponsorship for the Juniors
In a nutshell we have formed the draft outline of the sponsorship agreement and the sponsorship proposal. We are planning to fit all the teams out with new playing kit this year. This will require a substantial sponsorship investment. If you know of anyone who might have a level of influence over sponsorship dollars please let us know.
Once the documents have been finalised we will be distributing them to potential sponsors for consideration. We will keep you updated on this progress.

U18 Rep trials Information
Trial dates for the Schoolboys/U18 representative program have been finalised. This year the Clubs trial and Schools trial will take place on separate weekends, followed by a combined final trial. The advantage of seeing more talent over the three weekends affords Victorian coaches and selectors valuable information on the talent available, and gives every participant the maximum opportunity to prove their abilities.
The selected squad will then begin training, with some good lead up opportunities planned with games in Albury against strong Canberra opposition, and the Southern Regions Tournament over Queens Birthday weekend to look forward to. Following this, two squads will be selected to attend the National Championships.
The VIC A team will compete in the National Division 1 Championships in July in Brisbane, whilst the VIC B team will compete at the National Division 2 Championships in Geelong in June.

Junior training starts 23rd February!
(optional for the first 4 sessions)
Under 10 and younger from Tuesday 30th March 5:30 - 6:30pm
(optional for the first session)
For all the enthusiastic Under 12 and up players we are offering you the very best pre-season sessions available. Our Director of Coaching (Level 3 coaching accreditation) and Director of Junior Coaching (Level 2 coaching accreditation) will be taking the pre-season sessions. This means that you will have the best opportunity available to blow out all those summer cobwebs and be in the best shape possible for the 2010 season. The first few sessions will be dedicated to fitness. With this in mind why not bring a friend down to at least get a feel for what our club is about? They won't need to be rugby savvy. You can let them know they will be fighting fit by the time are finished with them! Who knows they might stay and play.
If you have not yet completed your registration we can sort that out in one of these first sessions too.
Calling all potential referees!
This means that across our U6, U8, U10, U12, U14, U16 & U18 teams we need to find 4 people to sit this course. So if you have ever thought, "I reckon I could do a better job than that ref out there", then why not put your ego where your thoughts are and have a crack?
You will not necessary have to ref a match in your first season. Last year only half the course attendee's officiated in a match.
So here is another way that you can get involved in the club this season.
The next ref course is coming up soon. let me know if you would be interested in going along - michael@adoncar.com.au
You can find some more information about refereeing at VicRugby's website too - www.vicrugby.com.au
BRUFC Juniors Super 14 tipping comp
Alrighty folks we have set up a tipping competition. We are using the Foxsports tipping competition. It's really easy to get involved in and will provide excellent bragging rights as the season progresses.
If you are on our database then you will receive an invitation shortly. The tipping is a private competition for our juniors only so its invitation only.
If you haven't got your invitation by the weekend then let me know at michael@adoncar.com.au and I'll sort it out!
Happy tipping!

Rego Day Update
It was great to see so many new faces on the day. The club is truly on a steep growth curve at the moment and the good news must still be spreading far and wide. If you were unable to make it down to the clubrooms on Saturday - don't fret! We will keep the online registrations open for another few weeks - http://www.trybooking.com/dkj . This is a really simple process and frees up hours of manually entry work for us folks too.
PLEASE NOTE: UNDER 18's - we have a number of lads that are keen to get this squad together. If you know of anybody that may be interested in having a run this year, please ask them to contact me direct - 0400 777 582 or michael@adoncar.com.au . We have an excellent colts side for this year and anyone playing in the Under 18s this year will certainly have a great pathway to the colts in the following year.
The next step from here is the first training run on Tuesday 23rd at 5:30pm for the grades Under 12 and up. Please note the first few training runs are optional and will be heavily focused on fitness. They will be administered by our top senior coaches so you are sure to feel the burn!
Craig and I will be attending the Junior Coordinators meeting tomorrow night and will provide all relevant updates from what is expected to be a pretty interesting get together.
Have a great week.

Coaching and Referee Courses update from VRU
Hi Michael,
Thank you for your email
There is a Foundation course on Sunday Feb 28 at Footscray Rugby Club. The second Foundation Course is on March 28 at Melbourne Grammar.
The Foundation course is an education course for both Coaches and Referees. (Tyronne Mitchell is the contact) Tyronne.mitchell@vicrugby.com.au The application form can be found on our website.
Your club U8 and U10 coaches will need to attend the Coaching Kids Rugby Course (Date and venue TBC – Probably mid April).
We will again be running the Green Shirt Program in 2010. The Green Shirt Program was established in 2009 to try and increase the recruitment of Referees here in Victoria. The Green Shirt Program is a four hour education course which includes Smart Rugby (Minimum level Occ Health and Safety needed to Referee in Australia) and Referee specific elements which include, Law, running lines, Game Management and Hand Signals. Once a participant completes the Course the VRU in consultation with the club will appoint them to Referee a junior match, with a Mentor Referee also appointed to the match. Once a Referee completes the online exam and referees five competition matches an assessor competency asses the referee to become a level one Accredited Referee.
It is a competition Rule that for every two team entries (Inc. juniors) you must put one name forward to sit the Green Shirt Program. (ie. If you enter eight teams you must put 4 participants on the course).
If you have junior coaches (U12-U16) wanting to do an education course, Foundation is the way to go.
If you have club members interested in Refereeing wait for the Green Shirt Course (March/April)
I will talk more about the Coaching Kids Rugby Course (For U8 and U10 coaches) on Tuesday night. If you have an U10 coach who wants to attend the Foundation course, that’s fine, but he will also need to attend the Coaching Kids Rugby Course.
I hope this has helped.
Kind Regards,
Chris Evans

Eric Tom (ET), our Junior Development Manager is convening a coaches meeting this week at the club rooms:
6:30pm Thursday 11th February
If you are considering coaching this year then please make yourself available for this session. ET will be running through basic requirements and his plan for the 2010 season. If you cannot make this date but wish to be involved in a coaching capacity, please contact me directly and we will sort an alternate arrangement for you.
Working With Children Requirement
If you are considering coaching or being involved in the teams in any way it is a requirement that you complete a working with children application.
There is plenty of information on this process at - http://www.justice.vic.gov.au/workingwithchildren
As it states on the website, the easiest way to do this is to pick up a form at the local post office. Please ask at the post office if they also process the forms. There are some post offices that are unable to process the forms so its important to check. Trust me, been there done that!
The more of us involved the more enjoyable the season will be so get your form processed and lets keep the club moving forward!
